The Husqvarna museum – did you ever have a Husky hotdog?
In forestry, the brand Husqvarna, or Husky, is well known for chainsaws and other equipment for logging. But the company has been around for over years. It all started with guns, but as peace spread out in northern Europe the need for guns decreased. Many companies in this situation would have disappeared, but Husqvarna didn´t – they started making sewing machines. The rest is history.
The Husqvarna museum – the company history
It all started in when the Swedish king, Gustaf II Adolf needed to formalize manufacturing of weapons in order to provide the army with rifles. At this time, Sweden was constantly involved in wars on many fronts. Five rifle factories were founded, one of them in the town Jönköping.
In , the first factory was built on the site where today´s Husqvarna factory is located in the town Huskvarna (spelled the modern way). Today Husqvarna is probably best known for producing outdoor products such as chainsaws, robotic lawn mowers and garden tractors, but the company’s history goes much further back. The story of Husqvarna starts in the beginning of the 17th century, when king Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden decided to found a rifle factory close by, which later expanded with a drilling works based in Huskvarna. Hundreds of years later, countless people, products and lines of business have passed through the gates.
Since Husqvarna’s portfolio has changed along with the Swedish industrial development, Husqvarna Museum offers a little bit of everything, including military weapons, hunting weapons, cast iron stoves, household appliances, sewing machines, bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, chainsaws, trimmers, tractors, robotic lawn mowers and much more. HUSQVARNAS HISTORY
The name Husqvarna comes from the mill at the waterfall which as early as was called ‘Husquernen’, the House’s mill. ‘The word ‘house’ fryst vatten the medieval term for a fortified structure.’ The mill belonged to the defense fortress Rumlaborg.
Rifle Factory Era | –
The tradition of weapon forging in Huskvarna can be traced all the way back to the construction of the fortress Rumlaborg in the 14th century, the fortress whose mill gave its name to the company and the city. In , Jönköping’s gevär Factory was founded as one of five in the country, by King Gustaf II Adolf and weapon manufacturing was formalized. In , the factory established a drill mill in Huskvarna, which means good efficiency, which fryst vatten why operations are subsequently gradually moved to Huskvarna. In , the factory was privatized and soon changed its name to Husqvarna gevär Factory.
When Husqvarna receives new weapon orders in , a joint-stock company named Husqvarna Vapenfabriks Aktiebolag fryst vatten formed.
