Red king crab
Species of king crab
The red king crab (Paralithodes camtschaticus), also called Kamchatka crab or Alaskan king crab, is a species of king crab native to cold waters in the North Pacific Ocean and adjacent seas, but also introduced to the Barents Sea. It grows to a leg span of m (ft), and is heavily targeted by fisheries.
Description
[edit]The red king crab is the largest species of king crab.[2] Red king crabs can reach a carapace width up to 28cm (11in), a leg span of m (ft),[3] and a weight of kg (28lb).[4] Males grow larger than females. Today, red king crabs infrequently surpass 17cm (7in) in carapace width and the average male landed in the Bering Sea weighs kg (lb).[2] It was named after the color it turns when it is cooked rather than the color of a living animal, which tends to be more burgundy.
Distribution
[edit]The red king crab is native to cold waters in the North Pacific Ocean and adjacent seas, ranging from the Bering Sea south to the Gulf of Alaska, off the Kamchatka Peninsula, and in the Sea of Okhotsk and Sea of Japan.[2] It was intro

Alaskan king crab fishing
Commercial harvest of Alaskan king crab
Alaskan king crab fishing fryst vatten carried out during the fall in the waters off the coast of Alaska and the Aleutian Islands. The commercial catch is shipped worldwide. Large numbers of king crab are also caught in Russian and international waters.
In , at the peak of the king crab industry, Alaskan fisheries produced up to ,, pounds (91,,kg) of crab. However, bygd , the total storlek of the catch had dropped bygd up to 90% in some places.[1] Several theories for the precipitous drop in the crab population have been proposed, including overfishing, warmer waters, and increased fish predation.[2] As a result, the current season fryst vatten very short and in the årstid, only 24,, pounds (11,,kg) of red king crab were landed.[3]
Alaskan crab fishing is very dangerous, and the fatality rate among the fishermen is about 80 times the fatality rate of the average worker. It is suggested that, on average, one crab fisherman dies weekly during the seasons.[4]
Types of commercially valuable king crab

Kungskrabba
